Snow and rain will mix to usher in a ‘pretty quiet’ week of weather

After a dayslong break from heavy snow and rainfall, the Spokane area will experience some fresh snow and rain Sunday afternoon and evening – but it’s likely not going to stick around for long, forecasters predict.

Less than an inch of a rain-and-snow mix is expected Sunday afternoon into Sunday evening, with about an inch or so in higher-elevation areas, such as the Spokane International Airport or the South Hill, according to National Weather Service forecasters.

And with temperatures in the mid-30s until the sun goes down, most of what does fall will melt before it can stick.

“We’re not expecting a whole lot in terms of accumulation,” weather service forecaster Andrew Kalin said. “It will probably start off as a rain-and-snow mix, then transition to snow, but it will be a very wet snow.”

Temperatures are expected to drop below freezing and hover around the upper 20s Sunday evening, Kalin said. He said this could leave some slick spots overnight and into the morning commute.

This week, Kalin said, temperatures will drop from their higher-than-normal average in the high 30s – as compared to this time last year, which was mid-30s – to the upper 20s and low 30s.

After the brief wet spell Sunday, Kalin said the area will experience “very little precipitation the rest of the week.”

“Really, no chances of precipitation at all,” he said. “It’ll be a pretty quiet week weather-wise.”
