Man accidentally shoots himself while slipping on ice

A man accidentally shot himself in the arm as he slipped and fell on the ice near Newman Lake early Thursday morning.

Deputies were called to the 10500 block of North McCoy Road around 12:40 a.m. by a resident who said a man had been shot. Deputies who responded found a 25-year-old wounded man who was vague about what had happened but said someone else was involved, said Deputy Mark Gregory.

As investigators pressed for further details about a suspect, the man confessed that no one else was there, Gregory said. He told deputies that he had crashed his car and was walking to a friend’s house when he slipped and fell and hit his head. At some point during his fall his .45 caliber gun went off and he was wounded in the arm.

A loaded handgun was recovered at the scene. The man was taken to a local hospital for treatment. He has not been charged with a crime but the investigation is ongoing, Gregory said.
