GSL boys: Gonzaga Prep moves closer to GSL championship

The Gonzaga Prep boys basketball team moved within a win of clinching a Greater Spokane League championship Friday.

The Bullpups survived a slow start, pulling away in the second half to a 67-54 win over the visiting Lewis and Clark Tigers.

The Tigers (11-6 overall, 10-5 league) led 14-8 after the first quarter. But G-Prep (16-1, 14-1), which is ranked second in the 4A RPI, pulled away to stay at 23-21 by halftime.

Anton Watson led the Bullpups with 17 points and seven rebounds, Sam Lockett had 15 points and five assists and Kea Vargas had 14 points. Cameron Underwood led LC with 20 points and Naje Smith had 14.

Shadle Park 81, University 69: The visiting Highlanders (14-3, 12-3) jumped on the Titans (7-10, 7-8) early and often.

The Highlanders opened a 26-13 lead after the first quarter and extended the lead to 43-28 by halftime.

Markieth Brown led Shadle Park with 25 points and Andreas Brown and Tanner Groves each had 18.

Boston Tacke led the Titans with 13 points, Brady Brinkman had 12 and Tanner Christensen added 11.

Central Valley 41, Rogers 28: While the perimeter shooting wasn’t terrific the defense was for the Bears (13-4, 11-4), who turned back the visiting Pirates (1-16, 1-14).

The Bears led 15-10 at half in the low-scoring game.

Ryan Rehkow led CV with 15 points and Billy Ames added 13 as the Bears moved into fourth place alone.

Evan Nomee led Rogers with 12 points.

Mt. Spokane 67, Mead 55: The Wildcats (7-10, 5-10) jumped all over the visiting Panthers (2-15, 0-15) in the first quarter, opening a 22-9 lead.

Then Mt. Spokane put it away with a 17-5 edge in the third period.

Phalon Maddox led Mt. Spokane with 18 points, Caleb Countryman had 15 and Jerry Twenge added 13.

Mason Tullis led the Panthers with 14 points and Vinny Saldana had 10.

Ferris 63, North Central 39: The Saxons (14-3, 12-3) remained in a tie with Shadle Park in second place in the easy win over the visiting Indians (3-14, 3-12).

Shamrock Campbell led the Saxons with 18 points and Michael Ervin had 15. Ferris opened a 32-21 lead by halftime and outscored the Indians 31-18 the final two quarters.

Isaiah Lockett and Rashawn Lemery had eight points each for NC.

Ferris visits league-leading Gonzaga Prep on Tuesday. Tipoff is at 7:15.
