Spokane Indians lose on Vancouver two-run rally in 12th inning

From staff reports

VANCOUVER, B.C. – Riley Adams doubled in Logan Warmouth in the bottom of the 12th inning and the Vancouver Canadians beat the Spokane Indians 4-3 in the finale of a three-game Northwest League series at Nat Bailey Stadium on Friday.

Spokane’s Melvin Novoa tied the game at 2-2 in the top of the ninth with a one-out, solo home run – his third of the season.

The Indians (11-18) took a 3-2 lead in the top of the 12th. Yonny Hernandez led off with a walk, went to second on a sacrifice by Miguel Aparicio, and scored on Matt Whatley’s one-out, ground-ball single to left. Whatley was later thrown out attempting to steal second for the third out.

Vancouver’s Reggie Pruitt led off the bottom with a double to right, went to third on a groundout and scored on Warmouth’s single to center. Adams then ripped a double to left and Warmouth came all the way around with the winning run for the Canadians (18-11).

Spokane starter Tyree Thompson allowed one run on six hits and a walk with four strikeouts over four innings. Reliever Ismel Lopez struck out seven over four innings, giving up one run on three hits and a walk. Josh Advocate (0-1) gave up two runs on five hits with three Ks over 3 1/3 innings.

Spokane grabbed the lead in the third inning without the benefit of a base hit. Hernandez drew a walk, and after a pitching change, stole second base. Miguel Aparicio walked, then Hernandez scored on a throwing error on a potential inning-ending double-play ball.

Vancouver tied it in the fourth. With one down, Brock Lundquist doubled to center, then scored one out later on a ground ball single by Brandon Polizzi.

The Canadians assumed the lead in the sixth. Kacy Clemens led off with a four-ball walk, then stole second base as Lundquist struck out. With two down, Polizzi came through again, singling to right to plate Clemens with the go-ahead run.

Polizzi led off the bottom of the ninth with a double to left off reliever Ismel Lopez, who had already pitched four innings. Manager Matt Hagan called upon Josh Advocate to face Owen Spiwak, who sacrifice bunted and moved Polizzi to third. Reggie Pruitt bounced one back to the mound, and Advocate threw home to nail Polizzi for the second out of the inning and preserve the tie. Pruitt was then thrown out attempting to steal second to end the inning and force extras.

The Indians put two runners on with two down in the 10th, but Whatley was picked off at second base to end the threat.

In the bottom of the 10th, Vancouver got a one-out double from Warmouth, and Adams’ single put runners at the corners. But Clemens struck out, and Lundquist flied out to kill the rally.

The Indians return to Avista Stadium on Saturday at 6:30 p.m. to face Salem-Keizer in the first of a five-game series.
