Youth notebook: Daniel Roy continues to make big splash
Success this summer continues to follow local swimming sensation Daniel Roy.
The Gonzaga Prep senior won the men’s 100-meter breaststroke at the 2017 Pacific Northwest Senior Long Course championships on Friday in Federal Way, Washington. Roy is ranked No. 1 in the nation in the 18-and-under age bracket.
Roy swam the distance in 1 minute, 1.72 seconds, which qualifies as the 11th-fastest American in the 17-18 age division in breaststroke history. It’s unofficially the fifth-best time ever recorded by a 17-year-old.
The time was also three-tenths of a second faster than his previous best at the 2017 USA Swimming Summer Nationals in Indianapolis, set three weeks ago. He won the 18-and-under “C” final at nationals.
Softball
Spokane Crew Fastpitch Black went 1-3 in the 16U A division of the Washington State Games II last weekend in Kent.
After going 1-2 in pool play, Crew was eliminated by Tri-City Thunder in the first round of bracket play in the single-elimination portion of the tournament. Tri-City Thunder went on to finish second.
Scholarship
Friends of the late Jeff Hinz, the Post Falls head football coach who died last summer after battling cancer, are sponsoring the Jeff Hinz Memorial Scholarship Golf Tournament to raise money for a scholarship in Hinz’s honor.
The tournament is Aug. 5 at The Links Golf Club. Cost is $100 per golfer and includes coffee, range balls, golf, lunch and a drink.

Basketball
The Spokane Legacy Red girls team is having a successful summer.
Legacy has competed in eight tournaments, posting a 25-8 record. They took fourth at the Arizona Adidas tournament, won their bracket at the End of the Trial tourney at Oregon City, Oregon, and won their bracket at the MSNM tourney in Centralia, Washington.
Team members include Sienna Swannack (Lakeside), Sydney Abbott (Davenport), Genesis Wilkinson (East Valley), Peyton Howard (Lewis and Clark), Brie Holecek (EV), Faith Adams (EV), Holly Flynn (Cheney), Aleena Cook (Liberty) and Jordan Rabe (Northwest Christian).
The team is coached by John Graham.
Baseball
Spokane youth teams rarely have success beyond area play. So what the Spokane Indians 11U Pony All-Star team accomplished is significant.
The Indians won a state title and defeated perennial power South Sound (Tacoma) 12-1 to earn a trip to the West Coast Zone regional last weekend. They went 4-0 in the tourney and outscored their opponents 69-20.
At regionals, the Indians went 2-2, reaching the semifinals – the first time a Spokane team has advanced to the semis.
“Everybody had a hand in the success,” coach Jeremy Weaver said. “We had timely hitting and turned three double plays. At this age that is pretty crazy.”
The West Zone winner has gone on to win the World Series the last two years.
Team members included: Emerson Fleck, Andrew Fox, Jake Hernandez, Dominic Huffman, Braedyn Killinger, Jeremiah Kirkwood, Rece Schuerman, Cole Startin, Bo Strahl, Tristan Utley, Sam Weaver and Max Workman. Assisting Weaver with the coaching duties were Joe Killinger and Brett Startin.
Twenty-one area players were selected to the Washington State Baseball Coaches Association All-State teams.
