MLB Capsules: Wainwright pitches, hits Cardinals over Dodgers

ST. LOUIS – Adam Wainwright hit a two-run homer off Brandon McCarthy and pitched six innings of four-hit ball, leading the St. Louis Cardinals over the Los Angeles Dodgers 2-0 on Thursday for a four-game split.

Wainwright (6-3) struck out six and walked two, pitching out of two-on, one-out jams in the fourth and fifth, and extending his scoreless streak to 16 1/3 innings. Matt Bowman, Trevor Rosenthal and Seung Hwan Oh pitched an inning each to complete a five-hitter. Oh threw a one-hit ninth for his 13th save in 15 chances.

Wainwright followed Paul Dejong’s second-inning single with a drive over the left-field bullpen for his 10th career homer. Wainwright has six hits and seven RBIs this season.

McCarthy (5-2) gave up seven hits in four innings, struck out six and walked one.

Diamondbacks 3, Marlins 2

MIAMI – Zack Greinke allowed one earned run in seven innings to earn his seventh victory, and Arizona rallied to snap Miami’s four-game winning streak.

Nick Ahmed had three of Arizona’s six hits, including a two-run single in the eighth to put the Diamondbacks ahead. They won for the 13th time in the past 17 games.

Greinke (7-3), who moved into a tie for the NL lead in wins, struck out eight and allowed four hits. He also singled and scored the Diamondbacks’ first run as he improved to 5-0 in nine games against the Marlins.

Archie Bradley struck out Marcell Ozuna with two on to end the eighth. Fernando Rodney, who blew a save in Wednesday’s extra-inning win at Pittsburgh, completed a five-hitter by pitching a perfect ninth for his 14th save.

Jeff Locke allowed one run in 5 2/3 innings in his season debut for Miami, but the bullpen couldn’t hold the lead. With the Marlins ahead 2-1, Kyle Barraclough (1-1) walked the first two batters in the eighth. The right-hander has given up 21 walks in 22 1/3 innings this season.

Orioles 7, Red Sox 5

BALTIMORE – Wade Miley allowed one run in seven innings, Mark Trumbo hit the first of Baltimore’s four home runs off Eduardo Rodriguez and the Orioles beat Boston.

Chris Davis and Adam Jones went deep for a second straight night and Jonathan Schoop capped the outburst with a three-run drive in the sixth that made it 7-1.

Miley (2-3) gave up five hits and a walk against the team he pitched for in 2015. Seeking his first win since April 14, the lefty did not allow a runner past first base after the second inning.

Rodriguez (4-2) allowed seven runs in 5 2/3 innings, and the four homers tied a career high. The former Orioles farmhand came in with a four-game winning streak and a 1.34 ERA in six starts at Camden Yards.

Yankees 12, Blue Jays 2

TORONTO – CC Sabathia won his fourth consecutive start, Aaron Hicks had a career-high six RBIs and Gary Sanchez homered twice to lead New York over Toronto.

Sabathia (6-2) allowed one run and five hits in 6 1/3 innings, struck out seven and walked none. He has won four straight starts for the first time since April and May 2012.

Hicks hit a three-run double in the first, singled in the third, had an RBI double in the seventh and a two-run double in the ninth.

Sanchez homered in consecutive at-bats against Marco Estrada (4-3), a solo drive in the second and a two-run shot in the fourth.

Brett Gardner his 999th and 1,000th hits for the Yankees, who reopened a three-game lead in the AL East.

Estrada allowed a season-high seven runs and nine hits in 3 2/3 innings.

Rockies 6, Mariners 3

SEATTLE – Mark Reynolds and Nolan Arenado homered to back Kyle Freeland, and Colorado stopped a three-game losing streak with a win over Seattle.

Colorado closed out four straight games against the Mariners in interleague play by jumping on Yovani Gallardo (2-6) with four runs in the second inning. Reynolds provided the big blow with a two-run homer to deep left-center field, his 14th this season. Arenado led off the third inning with his 13th home run, and the Rockies stopped Seattle’s four-game winning streak.

Freeland (6-3) won for the third time in four starts despite hitting three batters. The only runs Freeland allowed came on Guillermo Heredia’s solo home run and the sacrifice fly where shortstop Jean Segura was hurt in the fourth inning.

Greg Holland pitched the ninth for his 20th save.

Indians 8, Athletics 0

CLEVELAND – Corey Kluber pitched six shutout innings and struck out 10 in his first start since May 2, and Cleveland scored four runs during a strange sixth inning to beat Oakland.

Kluber (4-2) had been sidelined with a strained lower back, an injury that kept Cleveland’s ace sidelined for a month. Despite the long layoff, however, Kluber looked like his dominant self, allowing just two hits and recording his 26th career double-digit strikeout game.

The Indians scored four runs – three unearned – off Jharel Cotton (3-6) in the wild sixth. The game was momentarily delayed when sprinklers in left field went on automatically.

Jharel Cotton (3-6) allowed five runs, one earned, and four hits in 5 2/3 innings. He walked four and struck out four.

Brewers 2, Mets 1

NEW YORK – Chase Anderson pitched seven shutout innings and the Brewers benefited – temporarily, anyway – when a Milwaukee bat boy bumped into Mets infielder Wilmer Flores on a foul popup in a victory over New York.

NL Central-leading Milwaukee won the last two at Citi Field to salvage a four-game split.

Anderson (4-1) gave up three hits, walked one and struck out seven. In his previous start, he took a no-hit bid into the eighth inning to beat Arizona.

Corey Knebel pitched the ninth for his fourth save. Flores homered in the eighth on reliever Jacob Barnes’ first pitch.

Zack Wheeler (3-3) allowed two runs and 10 hits in 6 1/3 innings. He walked one and struck out six.

Twins 4, Angels 2

ANAHEIM, Calif. – The Minnesota Twins turned their first triple play in 11 years and then rallied in the ninth inning on Jason Castro’s two-run single.

The Twins overcame two solo home runs from the Angels’ Kole Calhoun, while keeping Albert Pujols stuck at career home-run No.599. Pujols had one single in four at-bats.

Miguel Sano homered in the second inning for Minnesota.

Calhoun’s second homer of the game, off reliever Taylor Rogers (3-1), put the Angels up 2-1.

The Twins went ahead in the ninth against reliever Jose Alvarez (0-2). Jorge Polanco reached on an error, Eddie Rosario followed with a double, and Castro singled them both in. Bud Norris walked in a final run.

Brandon Kintzler got the last three outs for his 14th save.
