Softball notebook: North Idaho 16U team wins championship in Oregon tourney

After losing its first two games on Saturday in pool play, the North Idaho Xtreme-Craig softball team got on a roll and rode the momentum to six straight wins and the championship on Sunday of the Silver Bracket in the 16U division at the Valley Invite in Hillsboro, Oregon.

The Hayden-Coeur d’Alene team outscored its last six opponents – five of them on Sunday – 41-9, defeating USA Athletics-Mercado from West Covina, California, 5-2 in the championship game.

There were 234 teams in the 14U, 16U and 18U tournament; 96 in the 16U division.

Spokane Diamonds-Butler tied for third in the Bronze Bracket of the 18U division, compiling a 2-4 record. There were 88 teams in the 18U division.

•North Idaho Xtreme-Craig was one of four division champions to go unbeaten in the Spokane Girls Fastpitch Softball Association Summer Classic on June 9-11 in Spokane, winning the 18U Gold division.

Xtreme went 5-0, defeating the Kelowna (British Columbia) Heat in the championship game.

Other division finals: 16U Gold: Tri-City Thunder (5-0) defeated Spokane Stealth-Finch. 14U Gold: Spokane Mudhens-Smith (6-1) d. Spokane Diamonds; 12U Gold: Spokane Mudhens-Connor (6-0) d. Washington Angels-Jager (West Richland); 12U Silver: LC Lady Warriors (Lewiston) (3-2-1) 9, Spokane Diamonds-Browning 3; 10U Gold: Heat Fastpitch (Warden, Washington) (6-0) d. Spokane Stealth; 10U Silver: Spokane Diamonds (4-1-1) d. Post Falls Blast.

The tournament drew 79 teams. Scores were not available for all division finals.
