Mt. Spokane High’s Gunnar Knutson shot a 75 on Tuesday at the Club at Rock Creek in Coeur d’Alene to win the U.S. Junior Amateur Championship qualifier.

Knutson, who will be a junior at Mt. Spokane, edged Kelowna’s Matt Hopley, Calgary’s Josh Berge and Spokane’s Benjamin Stone by one stroke. Knutson earned a spot in the U.S. Junior Amateur’s 156-player field next month at Flint Hills National Golf Club in Andover, Kansas.

Hopley is the first alternate and Lewis and Clark’s Stone is the second alternate.

Knutson won the District 8 3A championship with rounds of 66 at Indian Canyon and 67 at Downriver. The two-time All-GSL first-team player has placed in the top 15 twice at the State 3A tournament.
