When will we learn
The “Only Americans” headline from June 15 front page may be a call to action, following the shooting spree at the practice of the annual congressional baseball game. “Oh, when will we ever learn” from Pete Seeger came to mind immediately, followed by remembering President Teddy Roosevelt’s words, “Americans learn only from catastrophe, not from experience.”
How many catastrophes will it take? Count the catastrophes that touch you, from personal violence in your life, your family’s life, your neighborhood, your city, your state, our nation, the world. Violence ranges from food and housing insecurity, failing systems from education, health care, criminal justice, job training, income disparity to endless conflict and war. There is despair that nothing is changing.
Desperation is no excuse for the incident that took place. Words of support and comfort are well-intended and appropriate. Already blaming and finger pointing are taking hold. Remember as we point fingers, three fingers always point back at us.
It is time, past time, to listen, to look thoroughly and deeply at the underlying issues in our lives, locally to internationally. We must then come together for the future of all. The time is now. Will you join in? Make a difference.
