Area roundup: Derek Chapman helps Washington State baseball top Stephen F. Austin

Derek Chapman drove in the go-ahead run with a two-out, two-run seventh-inning double and Washington State took a 4-2 win over Stephen F. Austin in the first of a four-game, nonconference series at Bailey-Brayton Field on Friday.

Chapman drove in three runs for the Cougars (4-4) while J.J. Hancock added two hits, scored twice and stole two bases. Starting pitcher Damon Jones went a career-best six innings and struck out three while picking off three runners and receiving three double plays from the Cougar defense.

Reliever Colby Nealy picked up the win for the third straight game after throwing 1 2/3 scoreless innings and lefthander Scotty Sunitsch notched his fourth save with a scoreless ninth.

Stephen F. Austin fell to 4-7.

The series continues on Saturday with a doubleheader set to begin at 12 p.m.

Gonzaga 5, California 2: Sam Brown went 3 for 4 with two RBIs, Justin Jacobs went 2 for 4 with two RBIs and a double and the Bulldogs (3-4) beat the Bears (2-5) in the first of a four-game nonconference series in Berkeley, California.

Gonzaga picked up three runs in the final two innings. Parker Price singled home Tyler Frost in the eighth, then in the ninth Jacobs clubbed a two-run double.

Eli Morgan picked up the win (1-1), going seven innings and striking out 12. He gave up one earned run on three hits and two walks. Wyatt Mills earned the save, his third of the season, getting the last out of the game on a strikeout.

Softball

North Idaho (2-0) beat Davenport 16-2 and Northwestern State 16-1 in nonconference games at the Spring Games in Clermont, Florida. NIC plays Muskegon and West Virginia Wesleyan on Saturday at the tournament.
