College baseball: Washington State sweeps pair from Utah Valley

Washington State (9-4) ran its win streak to six – its longest since 2014 – and swept a nonconference doubleheader 10-0 and 9-2 over visiting Utah Valley (3-11) on Saturday at Bailey-Brayton Field.

In the early game, Ryan Walker (W, 1-1) struck out eight over 6 2/3 innings and scattered three hits and a walk. Joe Rosenstein and Caleb McAlister finished the shutout with 2 1/3 innings of relief.

Scoreless through five, the Cougars rallied for four in the sixth and six in the seventh. Shane Matheny, Cory Meyer and Andres Alvarez all picked up two hits and James Rudkin and Justin Harrer drove in a pair apiece.

In the second game, the Cougars exploded for six runs in the first inning and cruised to the win.

Cody Anderson (W, 2-0) was the beneficiary of the run support and struck out seven in seven innings, allowing two runs – both unearned – on four hits and one walk.

Matheny went 4 for 4 with two RBIs and a pair of doubles, Herrer and Meyer had two RBIs apiece and Alvarez went 3 for 4 with an RBI.

Cal State Fullerton 4, Gonzaga 3: The seventh-ranked Titans (8-5) scored three runs in the bottom of the eight and edged Bulldogs (6-7) in the second of a three-game series in Fullerton, California.

With two outs and a runner on first, Sam Hellinger (L, 1-1) hit pinch-hitter Tristan Hildebrandt, then Timmy Richards singled to load the bases. Hunter Cullen followed with a bases-clearing triple.

Starter Justin Vernia went six innings, allowing one run on seven hits and two walks, striking out six. Tyler Frost went 2 for 4 with a two-run homer, while Justin Jacobs and Gunnar Schubert had three hits apiece.

Whitworth 5-9, George Fox 3-2: Matthew Nelson slugged a two-run homer and the Pirates (8-6, 2-5) rallied to beat the Bruins (5-11, 4-7) in the first game of a Northwest Conference doubleheader.

Jordan McGowan added a solo shot and Joel Condreay drove in a pair. Hugh Smith (W, 2-2) went the distance, allowing three runs on four hits and three walks, striking out seven.

In the second game, Jordan McGowan hit a grand slam and Whitworth erupted for seven runs in the seventh inning for the sweep.

After the slam, the Pirates put two runners on and JT Phelan singled to center, where AJ Valencia committed an error and both runners scored.

Ryan Kingma (W, 3-0) went the distance and struck out four.
