Woman who died in Medical Lake house fire identified

Firefighters sift through debris at a home in Medical Lake after a woman was found dead in the one-story structure that burned early Tuesday, March 14, 2017. Firefighters were called to the home near 703 E. Barker at 12:45 a.m., said Spokane County Sheriffs Deputy Mark Gregory. When they arrived on scene, firefighters saw large amounts of fire and smoke coming from the home. They were hampered by a large amount of clutter inside and out, Gregory said. While fighting the fire, they learned that a woman might still be inside, Gregory said. But firefighters were unable to enter the structure. The woman who died in a Medical Lake house fire early Tuesday morning has been identified as 62-year-old Cherie Wilson.

Wilson, who died of smoke inhalation, according to the Spokane County Medical Examiner’s Office, was found in the debris of a one-story home near 703 E. Barker St. after the fire had been put out.

When firefighters arrived at the home around 12:45 a.m. Tuesday, they were unable to enter the structure due to heavy amounts of smoke. They were also hampered by large amounts of clutter, said Spokane County Sheriff’s Deputy Mark Gregory.

Wilson’s manner of death is pending the results of the fire investigation. Investigators in Medical Lake still are working to determine the cause of the fire.
