Suspension bridge leading to Idaho wilderness area collapses

NORTH FORK, Idaho – A suspension bridge over the Salmon River in east-central Idaho that provides access to the Frank Church River of No Return Wilderness has collapsed.

The U.S. Forest Service in a statement on Friday said it’s unclear why the Stoddard Bridge collapsed but a rock slide was suspected.

The bridge is about 40 miles west of North Fork, and just downstream of the confluence of the Salmon River and Middle Fork Salmon River.

The agency said hikers, hunters and anglers used the bridge to access the wilderness area.

The agency said it’s not clear if the bridge will be rebuilt.
