Emergency crews pull body from Spokane River near Canada Island

Police cordoned off access to the Spokane River as emergency crews pulled a body from water Monday afternoon near Canada Island. (SR)

Emergency crews pulled a body from the raging Spokane River late Monday afternoon.

Several witnesses called 9-1-1 around 4:20 p.m. and reported a person had gone off a footbridge by Canada Island, said Spokane Police Department Spokesman Officer Joshua Laiva.

It wasn’t clear if the person jumped or fell into the falls of the river. And police have not disclosed if the body was that of a man or woman.

Laiva said the Spokane Sheriff’s Department responded with a helicopter and divers in boats; Spokane Fire Department responded, too.

The bridges to and from Canada Island - which is a popular photo spot when the river is high and sprays over the concrete – were closed to visitors until the body had been located around 6:30 p.m.
