Greenacres Middle School student reports suspicious man near school

Parents of Greenacres Middle School students received a letter Tuesday warning them of a man who claimed to be a school staff member while offering a student a ride.

The incident occurred Monday morning while the student was walking to school in the rain, according to the letter from Principal Vern DiGiovanni. The student refused the man’s offer and he sped off heading south on Corbin.

The car is described as a tan two-door car with Washington license plates. The man is described as being in his late 30s with a dark brown or black beard and short hair.

“As always, we don’t want to cause unnecessary alarm, but feel it is important for parents to be aware of the situation,” DiGiovanni wrote. “We take this issue very seriously. The safety and security of our children is our paramount duty.”

The school notified the Spokane County Sheriff’s Office about the incident and asked for the School Resource Deputy to increase his patrols near the school, DiGiovanni said.
