Area roundup: CC Spokane splits with Wenatchee Valley in doubleheader

Isaac Wersland went 2 for 5 with a homer and five RBIs in the first game and CC Spokane (8-7) split a Northwest Athletic Conference doubleheader with Wenatchee Valley (1-11) on Thursday in Wenatchee.

Wersland’s homer was his fifth of the season and led a 17-hit attack in a 20-5 win. Dustin Yates drove in a pair and went 2 for 2 as six Sasquatch registered two or more hits. Kade Woods pitched six innings and earned the win, allowing four runs on eight hits with six strikeouts.

In the later game, the Knights pushed two across in the bottom of the ninth to escape with a 5-4 win. Dylan Yates hit a home run, his first of the season, for CCS, which committed four errors in the second game.

Softball

Madi Perez tossed a two-hit complete-game shutout in the first game and earned the win in the second with 2 1/3 innings perfect relief to help Whitworth (22-5, 13-2) to a Northwest Conference doubleheader sweep of George Fox (13-10, 9-8) in McMinnville, Oregon.

Perez limited George Fox to two singles over seven innings, striking out four, in a 1-0 win in the early game. Michelle Silva drove in the game’s only run in the first inning, plating Myranda Ramirez from third after Ramirez walked, stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch.

In the second game, the Pirates collected 17 hits but needed three runs in the eighth inning to earn a 5-2 win. Ramirez, Shannon Wessel and Michelle Silva all drove in runs with singles in the extra-inning rally.

Wessel finished 3 for 5 and Kinsey McNaught went 3 for 3 with two driven in. Four others contributed a pair of hits apiece. Perez came on for Ashley Trueblood (two runs over 5 2/3 innings) and picked up her 15th win of the season.
