Candidates file to challenge Spokane City Council incumbents in 2017 elections

A legislative assistant, a health care consultant and a restaurant owner were among candidates filing for local office on Monday, the first day of filing week for this fall’s elections.

Kate Burke, a legislative aide to state Sen. Andy Billig, filed for the northeast district seat currently held by Amber Waldref, who can’t seek re-election because of term limits. Burke, 28, is a former Americorps Vista volunteer who also worked for the Lands Council. A Spokane native, she said the district “needs a champion to fight for funding and services that they need.”

Tony Kiepe, a health care consultant for AristaPoint and employee of the Spokane Valley Chamber of Commerce, filed for the south district seat. He called the state of Spokane’s streets “totally unacceptable” and the city’s budget priorities should put roads and public safety first.

He’ll face Breean Beggs, a Spokane attorney appointed to that seat in 2016, who also filed Monday. Beggs and Kiepe both applied for the seat vacated by former Councilman Jon Snyder.

Also filing for a Spokane City Council seat Monday was Matthew Howes, co-owner of Adelo’s Pizza, Pasta and Pints. Howes filed for the Northwest Spokane City Council seat currently held by Candace Mumm. She filed Monday for re-election.
