Prep track and field: Idaho state meets headline weekend’s events

A number of North Idaho high school track and field athletes will challenge for gold medals at the state meets Friday and Saturday.

The 5A and 4A meets are at Dona Larsen Park in Boise and the 3A, 2A and 1A meets are at Middleton High School.

Grady Leonard of Coeur d’Alene, one of the top throwers in the nation, will be out to defend his title in the shot put. He’s also favored to win the discus title.

CdA’s Zac Magee is the returning champ in the 400 meters. He will be pushed by Alex Ayers of Lake City. Ayers is a top seed in the 300 hurdles.

Melody Kempton of Post Falls is the defending champ in the high jump.

Emily Hernandez of Lake City is the top seed in the shot put.

In 4A, Katherine Ruck of Moscow is the defending champ in the 3,200 and Whitnee Skalsky of Lakeland is the defending champ in the triple jump.

Other top seeds: Jillian Mael of Lakeland in the 4A 100; Landon Chang of Coeur d’Alene Charter in the 3A 1,600 and 3,200; and Isaac Lavala of Bonners Ferry and Corbin Maltba of Priest River in the 3A pole vault.

Washington track

Eastern Washington athletes will be out to earn state berths at various meets in the region and across the state.

The 4A regional involving Greater Spokane League and Mid-Columbia Conference athletes is Friday and Saturday at Richland High School

The top two in each event qualify for state. The meet begins Friday at 3 p.m. and Saturday at 11:30 a.m.

In 3A, GSL and MCC earned two berths to a bi-district meet with District 2 at the Southwest Athletic Complex nearing Boeing Field in Seattle.

Most of the third- and fourth-place finishers from the 3A subregional also earned berths to the bi-district meet where athletes from 30 schools will be compete. The top seven in each event move on to state.

  • The 2A regional featuring Great Northern League athletes facing off against athletes from 10 Central Washington Athletic Conference schools is Friday at Cheney High School, beginning at 3 p.m. The top two in each event advance to state.
  • The District 7 1A meet is Friday and Saturday at Shadle Park High School. The top two in each event qualify for state. The meet begins at 3 on Friday and 11:30 on Saturday.
  • The 2B regional and 1B regional for athletes from District 7 and District 9 will be held simultaneously at Central Valley High School on Friday and Saturday. In 2B, the top four in each event qualify for state. In 1B, the top four boys and top five girls go to state. The meets begin Friday at 3:30 p.m. and Saturday at noon.
