West Side deputy pleads guilty to reckless driving in crash that cost victim his legs

Associated Press

EVERETT – A Snohomish County sheriff’s deputy has pleaded guilty to reckless driving related to a crash that cost a man his legs.

The Daily Herald reported that John Sadro pleaded guilty to gross misdemeanor charges of reckless driving and reckless endangerment Wednesday in Snohomish County Superior Court. He was initially charged with vehicular assault, a felony.

Defense lawyer, David Allen, says Sadro “feels terrible about what happened” and “is taking responsibility for his actions.”

Prosecutors say Sadro was on duty April 17, 2015 when he ran a stop sign and was hit by a car. His patrol car spun and struck a parked truck, pinning Tom Gillette against his vehicle. Gillette’s legs were later amputated.

Snohomish County reached a $14.3 million settlement with Gillette and his wife in November.

Skagit County prosecutors handled the case to avoid a conflict of interest.
