Area roundup: North Idaho softball bounced from NWAC tourney

Payton Gibbs hit her 20th home run of the season and sixth-seeded Bellvue (35-14) eliminated 11th-seeded North Idaho (31-17) 15-5 in the Northwest Athletic Conference tournament at Merkel Sports Complex.

Gibbs finished 2 for 2 with four RBIs and two walks. For NIC, Mckenzie Schaller went 4 for 4 with a run and an RBI.

Earlier in the day, North Idaho fell to Walla Walla 9-6. Kennedy Anderson hit her 16th homer of the season and Nikki Miller added her 13th.

Washington 12, Michigan 4: Julia DePonte hit a three-run home run in the fifth inning and the Huskies (45-11) beat the Wolverines (42-12-1) in five innings in the second round of the NCAA tournament in Seattle.

Washington plays Michigan again on Sunday in the double-elimination regional round. The Huskies need one win to advance to Super Regionals while Michigan would need to beat Washington twice.

DePonte finished 3 for 4 with two runs. Taylor Van Zee went 3 for 4 with two runs and three RBIs while Ali Aguilar went 2 for 3 with two runs and two RBIs.

Women’s golf

The second round of the NCAA Division I women’s golf championship at Rich Harvest Farms in Sugar Grove, Illinois, was rained out. Play resumes on Sunday with Gonzaga’s Bianca Pagdanganan tied for 56th after shooting 8-over 80 in the first round on Friday.

Soccer

Spokane 1 Kitsup 1: Jesse Retan scored midway through the first half and the visiting Shadow men’s first team earned a draw in a National Premier League matchup.

Spokane 2, Washington 0: Havana Johnson scored twice and the Shadow women’s first team beat the league newcomers Timbers in a Northwest Premier League matchup in Vancouver, Washington.
