Seattle Mariners infielder Mike Freeman pitched the ninth inning of Saturday night’s 16-1 loss to the Chicago White Sox, the seventh time in club history that a position player has pitched for the M’s.

Freeman joins such illustrious names as Luis Sardiñas (July 29, 2016 at CHC), Jesus Sucre (Aug. 15, 2015 at BOS & June 12, 2015 at HOU), Jamie Burke (July 6, 2008 vs. DET), John Mabry (May 28, 2000 at TB) and Manny Castillo (June 26, 1983 vs. TOR).

Freeman was on the hill because of the utter lack of competency on the mound in this one and the need to save one more arm from being subjected to the offensive onslaught by the Sox.

Starter Yovani Gallardo got lit up for 10 runs, nine earned, on nine hits and two walks. Reliever Dillon Overton didn’t walk anyone, but maybe he should have. He surrendered seven hits in 4 1/3 mop-up innings. And he was a candidate to start on Sunday, but because he was called into this one already trailing by double digits, the M’s had to recall Chris Heston from Tacoma to make the start.
