The Spokane Chiefs announced Wednesday that forward prospect Cedric Chenier has signed a Standard Player Agreement and committed to playing in the Western Hockey League.

“We are very excited to sign Cedric and have him officially join our organization,” said Chiefs’ General Manager Scott Carter. “He had an outstanding season in Winnipeg and earned this opportunity. We expect him to be an important contributor for the Chiefs moving forward and are happy to have him on board.”

Originally a ninth round pick by the Chiefs in the 2015 WHL Bantam Draft, Chenier, 17, exploded for 65 points, including 30 goals, in only 43 games with the Winnipeg Wild of the Manitoba AAA Midget Hockey League last season, earning him the league’s scoring title.

The 5-foot-11, 180-pound Winnipeg native posted seven multi-goal games, including four hat tricks and one four-goal outing. He went without a point only 11 times all season.

The Wild went on to win the MMHL championship with a three-game sweep of the Yellowhead Chiefs. Chenier tied for the team lead in postseason scoring as well, picking up three goals and adding 13 assists for 16 points in 11 games.
