FORT COLLINS, Colo. – The Gonzaga women’s basketball team got off to a fast start in its season opener but it didn’t last in a 65-49 loss to Colorado State on Monday night.
The Bulldogs raced to a 20-11 lead after one quarter, shooting 50 percent from the field and 40 percent from 3-point distance, but shot 22 percent for the remainder of the game.
Jill Barta led the Bulldogs with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Zykera Rice added 10 points, and blocked two shots as did Barta. Chandler Smith added nine points and Laura Stockton had three assists and five rebounds.
The Zags held CSU scoreless for a six-minute stretch midway through the first quarter and led 20-9 thanks to a 13-1 run. Barta scored nine in the quarter, hitting a deep 3-pointer late in the quarter. GU forced four turnovers and led 12-7 on the glass, while shooting 50 percent.
Colorado State bounced back in the second quarter, an early 10-0 run helping the Rams cut their deficit to 24-22. By halftime, CSU led 33-31.
Gonzaga went more than half of the third quarter and trailed 40-33 by the time Zykera Rice scored with 4:14 remaining in the period. CSU quickly extended its lead to 46-35 and led 46-38 entering the fourth.
Gonzaga (0-1) plays at Montana on Saturday.
