1. Coeur d’Alene Downtown Parade and Holiday Lights Ceremony - 5 p.m., today, downtown Coeur d’Alene. This annual fun-filled event kicks off the holiday season for Coeur d’Alene and the Coeur d’Alene Resort. The annual Christmas parade will begin at Eighth Street and Sherman Avenue and make its way toward the resort beginning at 5 p.m., followed by the resort’s lighting ceremony to turn on 1.5 million holiday lights. 2. “Santa Express” – Today through Dec. 23, River Park Square. A holiday retail store for all kids in the community. The proceeds from the store benefit the Vanessa Behan Crisis Nursery, a safe shelter for kids who are in crisis situations. The store is open to shoppers ages 4-12, with gifts ranging in price from 50 cents to $8. Volunteers are on hand to help children shop and wrap their gifts while the “grownups” shop at the Santa Express Boutique in the front of the store. 3. Indies First at Auntie’s 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday, 402 W. Main Ave. On Small Business Saturday celebrate Indies First with local and regional authors at Auntie’s Bookstore. Indies First is a nationwide movement started by Sherman Alexie that encourages readers to shop their local independent bookstore first. 4. Gonzaga University Visiting Writers Series 7:30 p.m., Wednesday, Jepson Center’s Wolff Auditorium, Gonzaga campus. Spokane celebration of “WA129,” the poetry anthology curated by Washington poet laureate Tod Marshall that features a poem for each year of Washington statehood. Regional poets expected to read at the event include Terry Bain, Hank Buchanan, Dan Butterworth, Becky Carlson, Christopher Howell, Laurie Klein, Tod Marshall, Karen Mobley, Laura Read, Lynn Schott, Kat Smith, Ellen Welcker, John Whalen and Nance Van Winckel.
