Convicted sex offender killed in North Idaho when deer launched into windshield

A 70-year-old former high school counselor, who was convicted in 1994 of sexually exploiting a female student, was killed near Sagle, Idaho, Sunday afternoon when a deer hit by another driver was launched into his windshield.

Charles Jungblom, of Davenport, Washington, was driving southbound on U.S. Highway 95 near mile marker 466 when a northbound vehicle struck a deer, launching it into Jungblom’s vehicle, the Idaho State Police said in a news release.

Jungblom, who was driving a 2008 Chrysler Town & Country van with an adult passenger, received fatal injuries. His passenger was uninjured.

All involved were wearing seat belts, troopers said.

Jungblom is a former Davenport High School counselor who made national news when he was convicted in 1994 of sexual exploitation of a child stemming from two girls whom he enticed to make nude videos. He then raped one of the girls once a week for about a year, according to court records.

Jungblom was later charged with two counts of sexual exploitation and pleaded guilty to as single count, for which he served 51 months in federal prison. One of the girls said that she was groomed by Jungblom to join the high school’s “High 5” pep club, of which he was the faculty adviser.

The girl said Jungblom convinced her to allow him to make a nude video of her and take nude photographs. One girl then claimed Jungblom raped her once a week for about a year.

A year later, in 1995, the families of that girl and a second girl filed a civil suit against the Davenport School District. A jury later ruled that district administrators did little to investigate the girls’ complaints or protect them from Jungblom.

In an out-of-court settlement, the insurance company for the school district paid $4 million to one girl and $1 million to another.
