Area roundup: Gonzaga men’s soccer edged by Saint Mary’s

Saint Mary’s 1, Gonzaga 0: Tobias Clauss scored in the 57th minute to lift the visiting Gaels (4-4-2, 1-0-0) over the Bulldogs (6-4-1, 0-1-0) 1-0 in a West Coast Conference opener for both teams.

Ben Willis had three saves for the Zags.

Whitworth 3, Whitman 2: Jonah Snyder scored in the 84th minute – his sixth goal of the season – and the visiting Pirates (5-6-1, 3-3-1) topped the Blues (4-7-1, 3-3-1) 3-2 in a Northwest Conference tilt in Walla Walla.

Eric Espinoza and Ethan Kern both added their second goals of the season earlier in the match. Snyder collected an assist on Espinoza’s marker.

CC Spokane 2, Treasure Valley 0: Jesus Meraz-Rodrigue scored in the 49 minute and the Sasquatch (9-2-2, 6-1-1)) edged the visiting Chukars (2-8-1, 2-5-1) 2-0 in Northwest Athletic Conference play at SFCC.

The Sasquatch picked up insurance on a Treasure Valley own goal in the 70th minute. Caleb Garbuio made one save to record the clean sheet.

North Idaho 3, Blue Mountain 0: Conner Kinnune scored an unassisted goal in the second minute and the Cardinals (4-6-2, 3-3-2) shut out the visiting Timberwolves (1-9-0, 1-7-0) 3-0 in an NWAC battle.

Blue Mountain suffered and own goal in the 46th minute and Cade Roske added an unassisted goal in the 49th minute. Taner Sayer made one save and Luis Hernandez made two to blank the Timberwolves.

Women’s soccer

Whitworth 3, Linfield 2: Kelly Wucherer scored her second goal of the season in the 59th minute and the Pirates (8-3-1, 7-0-1) withstood a late charge to knock off the Wildcats (5-5-1, 3-3-1) 3-2 in an NWC game in McMinnville, Oregon.

McKenzie Hemp (2) and Kathryn Bischoff (3) added goals for Whitworth.

CC Spokane 7, Treasure Valley 1: Cheris Brown scored twice and the Sasquatch (9-3-1, 7-1-1) routed the Chukars (1-7-3, 1-6-2) at SFCC in NWAC play.

Peyton Vasquez, Sydney Clements, Molly Theis, Sabrina Castaneda and Chayse Avalos all added goals for CCS.

North Idaho 3, Blue Mountain 0: Katey Knaack scored in the 45th minute and the Cardinals (9-4-0) blanked the visiting Timberwolves (0-11-0, 0-9-0) 3-0 in NWAC play.

Blue Mountain suffered and own goal in the 67th minute and Ellory Ferris added an insurance marker in the 69th minute.

Volleyball

Southern Utah 3, Eastern Washington 1: MaCail Evans had 17 kills with nine blocks and the Thunderbirds (6-12, 1-5) beat the visiting Eagles (6-9, 3-3) in four sets (25-20, 20-25, 25-18, 26-24) in a Big Sky Conference clash.

Ashley Seiler had 17 kills with 12 digs for Eastern. Emma Dunn added 23 assists and Catelyn Linke had career-highs with 22 digs and 11 kills. Regan Harr had a double-double with 22 assists and 11 digs.

Eastern Washington hosts Idaho State on Thursday.

Idaho 3, Northern Arizona 2: Kaela Straw had 21 kills with six blocks and visiting Idaho (10-7, 5-1) outlasted Northern Arizona (6-11, 2-4) in five sets (26-24, 20-25, 25-18, 27-29, 20-18) in a Big Sky match in Flagstaff, Arizona.

Sarah Sharp added 19 kills, Haylee Mathis had 59 assists while Delaney Hopen and Alycia Wodke had 15 digs apiece.

Idaho hosts Weber State on Thursday.

Whitworth 3, Linfield 0: Lauren Budde registered 13 kills and the Pirates (10-6, 7-1) defeated the visiting Wildcats (8-7, 2-6) in straight sets (25-16, 25-20, 25-18) in Northwest Conference play.

Gracie Meiners dished out 41 assists and Taylor Wicht had 15 digs.

North Idaho 3, Wenatchee Valley 0: Haylee Templeton handed out 36 assists with 10 digs and the Cardinals (18-5, 8-0) swept the visiting Knights (11-10, 3-5) in three sets (25-17, 25-23, 25-10) in Northwest Athletic Conference match.
