Spokane County officials said Wednesday that 500 vehicle owners were given the wrong registration tabs within the past week.

County Auditor Vicky Dalton said a licensing employee pulled a box of 500 sets of tabs with serial numbers that didn’t match the numbers on registration renewal paperwork.

Dalton said it’s a rare mistake and was quickly discovered by licensing staff. Two “eagle-eyed” vehicle owners also noticed discrepancies, she said.

Dalton said replacement tabs were mailed to affected vehicle owners on Wednesday. If the incorrect tabs are already on a vehicle, the owner should immediately place the correct tabs on top, she said.

Dalton urged drivers not to use the incorrect tabs on other vehicles. If a driver is pulled over with the wrong tabs, she said, “you will be dealing with law enforcement.”

Any incorrect tabs that have not been placed on a vehicle should be returned to the auditor’s office, Dalton said. Owners can contact the office for a postage-paid envelope at (509) 477-2222.

“We’d really like to have the bad tabs back,” she said.
