Concern over ‘Get Real’

Spokane Public Schools board is very close to approving a new controversial human growth and development curriculum. A district citizen’s advisory committee, has chosen one called “Get Real” that will offend the sensibilities and beliefs of those of faith, specifically teaching children things that are in direct opposition to the beliefs and values found in many religious traditions practiced and otherwise respected in this community.

While Planned Parenthood, the preparer of the curriculum, claims the curriculum is medically accurate, the curriculum frames promiscuity as reasonable behavior for even pre-teens, seemingly promoting Planned Parenthood services, including abortion services, thus extending itself well outside simple medical accuracy. A member of the citizens advisory committee is from Planned Parenthood and the top three curriculum choices were all created by that organization and would generate revenue for them, if adopted.

I’m pleased that the district administration recognized that more community engagement was needed before the vote was scheduled. I sincerely hope that respect for our community values will be taken into consideration by the school board and that the “Get Real” curriculum will not be selected.
