College roundup: Gonzaga volleyball sweeps San Francisco

Sarah Penner finished with a match-high 13 kills Thursday and Gonzaga maintained its third-place standing in West Coast Conference volleyball with a 25-23, 25-23, 25-23 victory over visiting San Francisco.

Alyse Whitaker and Payton Mack combined for 19 kills as the Bulldogs (13-9, 8-2) won their second consecutive match after being swept by conference-leading BYU (10-0) and second-place San Diego (9-1).

Faith Smith added 30 assists and Tiyana Hallums had 17 digs for the Bulldogs, who registered their fifth sweep of the season.

Erica Ronda had eight kills and 13 digs for the Dons (3-21, 0-11).

The match marked the beginning of the second half of the WCC season.

  • Andrea Hale accounted for a match-best 20 kills to guide host Weber State (6-17, 4-7 Big Sky) to a 25-14, 25-20, 25-20 victory over Eastern Washington (6-14, 3-8) in Ogden, Utah. EWU’s Emma Dunn made her first career start in her home state and had a career-high 35 assists. Ashley Seiler added 14 kills and 11 digs for the Eagles, and Megan LaFond had 12 kills and 11 digs.
  • Abby Garrity and Chloe Hirst finished with 12 kills apiece to lead Idaho State (10-14, 7-4 Big Sky) to a 25-19, 26-24, 25-20 victory over Idaho (12-10, 7-4) in Pocatello. Sarah Sharp recorded a match-high 18 kills to reach double figures for the sixth consecutive match for the Vandals, who dropped their third consecutive match to fall two games behind first-place North Dakota in the North Division.

Women’s soccer

Elyse Bennett scored in the 63rd minute and Ella Dederick recorded the shutout to lead Washington State (9-6-2, 4-5-0 Pac-12) to a 1-0 win over Arizona State (4-10-3, 1-6-2) in Tempe, Arizona.

Bennett headed in a cross pass from the far side from Sydney Pulver to score her second goal of the season. Dederick posted her ninth shutout of the season.

  • Mikayla Colohan finished with two goals and one assist while leading visiting BYU (6-6-4, 3-2-1 WCC) to a 6-3 win over Gonzaga (10-6-1, 2-5-0). BYU’s Elise Flake and Madie Mathews scored 6 minutes apart in the second half to give the Cougars a 4-2 lead. GU’s Jordan Thompson scored on a penalty kick in the 70th minute, but BYU scored twice more to pull away.

Kelcey Cavarra and Charlotte Brascia scored second-half goals to rally Arizona (8-4-4, 5-2-2 Pac-12) to a 2-1 win over Washington (9-7-2, 2-5-2) in Tucson, Arizona. The Huskies’ Kimberly Keever scored in the 28th minute.

Men’s soccer

Scott Menzies scored in the 39th minute, his seventh goal of the season, and Washington (11-6-1, 4-3-1 Pac-12) held on for a 1-0 win over host San Diego State (5-10-0, 0-6-0).
