Justice isn’t smart
The Spokesman-Review says its endorsement of Judge Staab “is an easy call.” Then you state she has been a solid judge in a court known for innovation and alternatives to jail time. She serves (you further state) on two subcommittees of the Law and Justice Council, including one on racial equality. I personally don’t want a judge taking aggressive advocacy positions on committees that many in the community consider experimental. I prefer a judge engaged in the legal equality of the law.
In the same day’s paper, there is an article about a man arrested for a downtown Spokane murder who had already been convicted of theft. As a convicted felon, he should not possess a firearm but he was again arrested in 2015 and pleaded guilty to drive-by shooting. Now he is arrested for murder.
There is nothing smart about the justice he has received to date. Your Staab endorsement disclosed her opponent (Adam Papini) was arrested on drunken driving charges. While that is a bad offense, I would maintain it is no worse than a drunken-acting City Council or activist agenda-driven judges.
