Overview: When these teams met to open the 2016 season in Spokane, Central Iowa nipped Whitworth 50-49 in overtime. Now the Pirates, ranked No. 28 in the preseason NCAA Division III poll, make the 1,500-mile trek to the Hawkeye State to get even. Both squads finished 8-2 a season ago and are expected to finish toward the top of their respective conferences. Whitworth was tabbed second in the Northwest Conference preseason poll and Central was picked fourth in the nine-team Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. Whitworth returns 13 starters, eight on offense, including quarterback Ian Kolste, who led Division III in passing yards (3,790) in 2016. The Dutch, who return six starters on offense, welcome back Sam Markham, who led Division III in receptions in 2016 (105).
