Area roundup: Washington State volleyball sweeps tournament host Fairfield

Taylor Mims had a career-high 17 kills, McKenna Woodford added 15 kills and Washington State (8-1) took care of tournament host Fairfield (4-6) in straight sets (29-27, 25-14, 25-17) in the Fairfield (Connecticut) University Tournament on Saturday.

Ashley Brown and Penny Tusa chipped in with 19 assists apiece.

Gonzaga 3, Fordham 1: Jenna Keuhn had 12 kills, Faith Smith added 27 assists and 10 digs and Gonzaga (4-5) beat Fordham in four sets (25-16, 25-18, 23-25, 25-15) in the Grand Canyon University Tournament in Phoenix.

Gonzaga swept tourney host Grand Canyon (25-20, 25-23, 26-24) in its earlier match of the day. Sarah Penner had 10 kills, while Smith added 15 assists with 18 digs.

Idaho 3, Grand Canyon 0: Kaela Straw had 16 kills, Haylee Mathis added 36 assists and Idaho (4-4) beat host Grand Canyon (4-5) in straight sets (25-19, 25-15, 25-20) in the Grand Canyon University Tournament in Phoenix.

Idaho swept Fordham (25-11, 25-16, 25-15) in its first game of the day. Sarah Sharp led with nine kills, Mathis handled out 34 assists and Alycia Wodke added 11 digs.

Eastern Washington 3, Canisius 2: Ashley Seiler had 20 kills, Regan Harr added 59 assists and Eastern Washington (3-6) beat host Canisius (2-8) in five sets (25-18, 25-17, 22-25, 22-25, 15-8) in the Canisius Tournament in Buffalo, New York.

In its early match, Eastern Washington beat Bucknell in five sets (25-18, 25-21, 23-25, 19-25, 15-8). Seiler had 20 kills and Harr added 44 assists.

Claremont-Mudd-Scripps 3, Whitworth 0: Clara Madsen had 18 assists, four service aces and eight digs to pace Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (5-2) over Whitworth (3-3) in straight sets (25-15, 25-15, 25-13) in the Cal Lu Fornia Invitational in Thousand Oaks, California.

Whitworth fell to Whittier in five games (25-19, 16-25, 15-25, 25-15, 15-7) in its early game. Cassandra Mendoza had 21 kills with 12 digs while Gracie Meiners had 47 assists with 12 digs.

Linn-Benton 3, CC Spokane 1: Linn-Benton beat CC Spokane 3-1 in the Preseason Spokane Invitational at Spokane CC. In earlier matches, CC Spokane outlasted Grays Harbor 3-2 and handled Bellevue 3-1.

North Idaho 3, Montana-Western 0: North Idaho (10-5) swept Montana-Western (26-28, 25-18, 27-25, 25-18) in the University of Providence Tournament in Great Falls, Montana.

Women’s soccer

Whitworth 1, Corban 0: Annie Clark scored in the 29th minute and Whitworth (1-2-0) topped visiting Corban (2-3-0) in a nonconference matchup. Sienna Tanner had four saves and Molly Webster added one in a half each for the combined shutout.
