Area roundup: Washington State’s Jen Greeny earns 100th win for Cougars

Washington State volleyball picked up a couple of wins on Friday at the Missouri State Dr. Mary Jo Wynn Invitational in Springfield, Missouri, including Jen Greeny’s 100th win as head coach of the Cougars (212-129 career).

Washington State 3, Missouri State 2: Taylor Mims had 20 kills, Ashley Brown added 23 assists with 21 digs and the Cougars (10-1) beat host Missouri State (7-4) in five sets (18-25, 25-22, 25-15, 23-25, 15-12).

McKenna Woodford added 15 kills while Ella Lajos had nine blocks.

Washington State 3, Tennessee State 0: Mims had 15 kills with two service aces, eight digs and one block to lead Washington State over Tennessee State (4-7) in straight sets (25-18, 25-15, 25-17) for its sixth straight win in the Cougars’ early match of the day.

Woodford added 10 kills with two solo blocks, Penny Tusa led the match with 20 assists and Alexis Dirige had 13 digs.

Denver 3, Gonzaga 0: Kayla Principato had 12 kills and host Denver (8-2) beat Gonzaga (4-6) in straight sets (25-21, 25-23, 25-15) in the Denver Invitational. Sarah Penner led the Zags with 10 kills

Idaho 3, San Jose State 0: Kaela Straw had eigth kills, Haylee Mathis added 15 assists and Idaho (5-5) beat San Jose State (7-3) in straight sets (25-22, 25-19, 27-25) in the Santa Clara Tournament in Milpitas, California.

In the Vandals’ early game, host Santa Clara snapped Idaho’s three-game winning streak and took a three-set win (25-23, 25-16, 25-19). Sarah Sharp and Straw had nine kills apiece.

Pacific Lutheran 3, Whitworth 0: Chloe Epker had 14 kills and Pacific Lutheran (7-2, 1-0) beat Whitworth (3-6, 0-1) in straight sets (25-22, 25-23, 25-20) in Northwest Conference action.

Emiko Kahler paced the Pirates with 12 kills and Cassandra Mendoza added 11 kills with 10 digs. Gracie Meiners had 29 assists with eight digs.

CC Spokane at Highline: Baylee Gorder had 10 kills with three service aces, Kendall Collins added 25 assists and CC Spokane (13-2) beat Highline (7-15) in straight sets (25-19, 25-17, 25-16) in a nonconference Northwest Athletic Conference match.

Women’s soccer

Gonzaga 5, Fairleigh Dickinson 1: India Jencks scored goals in the 30th and 55th minute and Gonzaga (6-1-1) topped visiting Fairleigh Dickinson (2-6-1) 5-1 in a nonconference game.

Eastern Washington 4, Nevada 0: Alexis Stephenson scored two goals and Eastern Washington (5-4) routed visiting Nevada (1-6) 4-0 in a nonconference game. Kelsee Winston made one save for the clean sheet.

Idaho 5, Memphis 4: Bridget Daley’s second goal of the match in the 87th minute completed a comeback from three goals down and Idaho (3-4-1) beat visiting Memphis (6-2) 5-4 in a nonconference game.

Memphis built a 4-1 lead over 54 minutes, but the Vandals reeled off four straight goals in the next 11 minutes, with Olivia Baggerly’s 78th minute notch tying it at 4-4.

Men’s soccer

Gonzaga 4, Cal State Bakersfield 1: Matt Kintzle scored in the 51st minute to break a 1-1 tie and Gonzaga (4-2) cruised past Cal State Bakersfield (2-3) 4-1 in the Johann Memorial Classic in Las Vegas. Ben White, Sam Olson and Joe Corner all added goals.
