Area roundup: Washington State women’s soccer edged by No. 2 Stanford

Maddy Haro scored a penalty kick goal in the 35th minute but No. 2 Stanford (8-1-0) held off Washington State (5-2-2) 2-1 in a Pac-12 Conference match on Thursday.

Tierna Davidson scored her second of the season in the 24th minute and Jaye Boissiere made it 2-0 for Stanford in the 34th minute. But 44 seconds later, the Cougars were awarded a penalty kick following a corner kick play and Haro made good to halve the deficit.

Cardinal keeper Alison Jahansouz made the one-goal advantage stand up through the second half.

WSU hosts Colorado on Thursday.

Volleyball

Gonzaga 3, Saint Mary’s 2: Jenna Keuhn had 15 kills with 10 digs and Gonzaga (6-7, 1-0) beat visiting Saint Mary’s (4-7, 0-1) in five sets (36-24, 16-25, 23-25, 25-20, 15-13) in a West Coast Conference opener.

Chapin Gray and Sarah Penner added 13 kills apiece and Faith Smith added 26 assists with 15 digs.

Eastern Washington 3, Montana 1: Ashley Seiler registered 16 kills with 11 digs and Eastern Washington (4-6, 1-0) topped Montana (5-9, 0-1) in four sets (25-22, 25-21, 19-25, 25-23) in a Big Sky Conference opener.

Alexandra Espinosa added 14 kills with 11 digs for the Eagles. Missy Huddleston (CdA) paced Montana with 18 kills.

Idaho 3, Montana State 0: Kaela Straw had 12 kills and Idaho (6-6, 1-0) beat Montana State (4-6, 0-1) in straight sets (25-19, 25-14, 25-12) in a Big Sky Conference opener.

Haylee Mathis added 28 assists with six blocks and a pair of service aces.

Golf

Russell Grove of North Idaho College won the Pacific Northwest PGA Professional Championship by five strokes at Circling Raven Golf Club in Worley, Idaho.

Trevor Fox of The GC at Black Rock finished fourth. The top seven professionals in the event advanced to the PGA Professional Championship at Bayonet Black Horse in Seaside California on June 17-20.
