Area roundup: Alexis Rolan, Keshun McGee lead Eastern Washington at Pelluer Invitational

Freshman Alexis Rolan won three events and sophomore Keshun McGee took two Saturday to lead host Eastern Washington at the 46th Pelluer Invitational at Roos Field.

Rolan won the women’s 200-meter run in 25.37 seconds and the long jump at 19 feet, 5 1/2 inches. She tied for first place with teammate Rebecca Tarbert in the 100 (12.37).

McGee won the men’s long jump at 23-8 1/4 and took the triple jump with a personal-best 51-2 1/4.

Washington State athletes swept the hammer throws and took the top four spots in the men’s high jump.

Amani Brown won the men’s hammer at 208-6 on his final throw. Aoife Martin won the women’s hammer at 166-7.

Cougars Max English, Beau Sheeran and Keelan Halligan finished first through third, respectively, in the men’s high jump after all cleared 6-6 3/4. Mitch Jacobson (6-4 3/4) placed fourth.

Gonzaga picked up wins from Scott Kopczynski (3:49.88) in the men’s 1,500 and Troy Fraley (15:19.19) in the men’s 5,000. Gonzaga finished 1-4 in the 1,500.

Baseball

California 6-3, Washington State 3-4: JJ Hancock’s RBI single in the bottom of the 10th allowed the Cougars (10-19, 5-10 Pac-12) to split a doubleheader with the Golden Bears (21-12, 7-8) at Bailey-Brayton Field in Pullman.

In the opener, Cal pushed across four runs on five hits in the fourth to take command. Jared Horn (4-4) allowed five hits and two earned runs in six innings for the win.

Ryan Walker (3-2) worked the final four innings for the win the second game. Andres Alvarez tied the game at 3 with an RBI single in the seventh, and doubled and scored the winner on Hancock’s liner to right-center in the 10th.

Oregon at Washington, ppd.: The Huskies’ Pac-12 home game against the Ducks was rained out. The teams will attempt to play a doubleheader, starting at 10 a.m. Sunday.

Whitworth 7-5, Pacific 0-6: Hugh Smith threw a complete-game shutout in the opener and the Pirates (15-19, 10-13 Northwest Conference) had to settle for a split with the Boxers (15-21, 9-14) at Forest Grove, Oregon.

Joey Galeno’s RBI single in the ninth gave Pacific the second-game win and eliminated the Pirates from contention for the conference tournament.

Smith (6-1) scatted seven hits in the opener, striking out seven and walking two. Joel Condreay drove in three runs, including a two-run double during a four-run fourth.

In the second game, Spencer Locati’s two-run homer to left capped a four-run eighth and allowed the Pirates to tie the game at 5-all.

Yakima Valley 8-1, CC Spokane 0-3: Marcus Cain pitched seven solid innings and Mitch Dean with 2 for 4 with a homer as the Sasquatch (23-7, 10-2 Northwest Athletic Conference) defeated the Yaks (28-6, 10-2) in the second game at Spokane Falls CC to remain tied for first place in the East Region.

Cain allowed four hits while striking out eight. Reed Harrington pitched two hitless innings for the save.

In the opener, Gerald Hein struck out 11 over seven innings and Jake Kirchoff had a two-run single in the fifth to guide the Yaks.

Softball

Whitworth 7-6, Pacific 4-10: Sara Gayer’s two-out, two-run double to right-center in the first launched the Pirates (22-16, 15-11 NWC) toward a win over the Boxers (21-15, 15-13) in the first game at Forest Grove, Oregon.

Hailey Miller finished 2 for 4 with four RBIs in the second game, including a three-run homer in the first, to power the Boxers.

Chelsey Hayes added an RBI double during a three-run seventh to provided insurance for the Pirates in the opener. Madelyn Carlson improved to 15-7, allowing four earned runs in 6 1/3 innings.

CC Spokane 15-14-19, Big Bend 13-6-21: Jacqueline Adams finished 3 for 6, with a triple, four RBIs and her first career homer as the Sasquatch (15-11, 9-9 NWAC) defeated the Vikings (17-17, 8-12) to open a rare tripleheader at Spokane Falls CC.

Kirsten Anstrom finished 3 for 4 during the Sasquatch’s middle-game win.

Savannah Hughes and Lynsey Valverde homered to give Big Bend the final-game win. Tia Pau, Hannah Springs and Anstrom homered for CCS.

North Idaho 11-3, Walla Walla 0-16: Kalyna Korok homered twice and had four RBIs to lead the host Cardinals (27-3, 18-2 NWAC) past the Warriors (22-8, 11-5) during the five-inning opener.

In the second game, Kylee Hill finished 4 for 4 with three runs and the Warriors broke open a close game with an eight-run third to end NIC’s 11-game winning streak.

Madi Mott checked Walla Walla on one hit in four innings in the opener, striking out four. Kennedy Anderson hit a three-run homer in the fourth.

California at Washington, ppd.: The Huskies’ Pac-12 home game against the Golden Bears was rained out. The teams will attempt to play a doubleheader, starting at 10 a.m. Sunday.

Women’s rowing

Washington State’s third varsity 8 had the best finish of the day for the Cougars, claiming second in the ‘A’ Final at the Clemson (South Carolina) Invitational at Lake Hartwell.

The Cougars placed sixth in the eight-team field. WSU’s varsity 8 placed sixth and the second varsity 8 was seventh in their respective ‘A’ Finals.

  • Gonzaga’s varsity 8 boat marked its fastest time this spring (6 minutes, 33 seconds) during opening-day competition at the Lake Natoma Invite in Gold River, California. Racing continues Sunday.
