Eastern Washington quarterback Gage Gubrud has twice been a finalist for the Walter Payton Award, a trophy given to the top offensive player at the FCS level.

Naturally, the senior from McMinnville, Oregon was named to this year’s STATS FCS preseason Walter Payton Award watch list.

Gubrud, who totaled 9,441 yards of offense the last two seasons, is one of 25 preseason nominees. He is one of four Big Sky Conference candidates, joining UC Davis receiver Keelan Doss, UC Davis quarterback Jake Maier and Northern Arizona quarterback Case Cookus.

Past Walter Payton winners Steve McNair, Tony Romo, Brian Westbrook, former Idaho quarterback John Friesz, Brian Finneran, Jimmy Garoppolo and former EWU receiver Cooper Kupp moved on to the NFL.

Gubrud and the Eagles begin their 2018 season at home against Central Washington Sept 1.
