Spokane Symphony’s outgoing music director Eckart Preu has been hired by Maine’s Portland Symphony Orchestra. Starting with the 2019-20 season, Preu will serve a three-year term as music director.

“In Eckart Preu, we found a conductor of extraordinary musicianship who possesses a remarkable ability to inspire and connect with musicians and audiences on and off the podium. He also brings extensive experience advancing orchestras to the next level, and an exciting vision for what the PSO can become,” said Tim Boulette, PSO music director and search committee chair.

Preu replaces Robert Moody at the Portland Symphony.

During the 2018-19 season, Preu will serve as designate conductor for the PSO while continuing his other various directorial responsibilities across the country, including his “Farewell Season” with the Spokane Symphony.

Preu also serves as music director of the Long Beach Symphony Orchestra in California and the Cincinnati Chamber Orchestra.
