Inmate who died Thursday ID’d; had been sentenced for rape of a child

From staff reports

The Spokane County Medical Examiner has identified the inmate who died in Spokane County Jail Thursday as 56-year-old Christopher N. Luman.

Early Thursday morning, medical staff responded after Luman complained of trouble breathing following a fistfight with another inmate. The staff provided medical treatment, but his condition worsened and paramedics were called for. He died at approximately 2:15 a.m., according to the Spokane County Sheriff’s Office.

In late July, Luman was sentenced by Judge John O. Cooney to 90 months in prison and 36 months of probation after being found guilty on two counts of attempted first-degree rape of a child. He was one of 13 people arrested in the child-rapist sting carried out in 2016.

Luman is the seventh inmate to dies in the jail in the past 14 months.
