Kootenai County deputies find 58 pounds of marijuana during traffic stop

The Kootenai County Sheriff’s Office arrested a 70-year-old man after deputies found 58 pounds of marijuana in his car during a traffic stop Thursday.

Deputy Nate Nelson at 11:30 a.m. initiated a traffic stop on Interstate 90 near state Highway 3 for a traffic infraction. The driver of the vehicle, Michael A. Campbell, told deputies he was a retired school teacher traveling from Yakima to Chicago, according to a sheriff’s office news release.

While deputies were speaking with Campbell, K-9 Pogo alerted the deputies to the presence of drugs in the vehicle. A search led to the discovery of 58 pounds of marijuana, three grams of methamphetamine, more than $1400 cash and a loaded pistol, the sheriff’s said.

Campbell was booked into the Kootenai County Jail for felony drug trafficking, possession of a controlled substance and possession of paraphernalia.
