North Idaho men lose chance to take over first place alone

Kolby Huerta led five players in double figures with 20 points and Big Bend overcame a 78-66 deficit to defeat host North Idaho 84-82 in Northwest Athletic Conference men’s basketball play Wednesday.

The loss kept the Cardinals (19-6, 9-3) from taking over first place alone in the East Region. Walla Walla, which had been tied for first with NIC, also lost on Wednesday.

Aushanti Potts-Woods scored 17 points and Tyler Brimhall added 16 points and 10 rebounds for NIC.

NIC travels to third-place Community Colleges of Spokane (8-4 NWAC) on Saturday.

Women

Big Bend 88, North Idaho 85: Miranda Johnson scored 36 points, hitting 8 of 13 on 3-pointers, and the visiting Vikings (18-8, 7-6 NWAC) built a 14-point lead and held off the Cardinals (16-8, 7-5).

Big Bend outscored NIC 23-7 at the line. Sunnie Martinez added 12 assists and Hailey Garrity had 11 rebounds for the Vikings.

Shae Logozzo led three Cardinals in double figures with 23 points off the bench.
