A Moses Lake woman was badly burned in a car fire after her acquaintance tried filling a garbage can full of gas in the back seat.

At about 8:15 a.m. Saturday, emergency crews deputies responded to Cascade Grocery at 8034 Valley Road Northeast, where a car was fully engulfed in flames. The woman was able to escape the car, but sustained severe burns. She was transported to Samaritan Healthcare in Moses Lake where her condition is unknown.

Grant County Sheriff’s deputies say an unidentified man was pumping gas into a garbage can in the back seat when the woman lit a cigarette, the fumes of which ignited the fuel and set the car on fire.

The male ran away on foot and has yet to be located. In the trunk of the car deputies found a “large quantity of marijuana,” according to a sheriff’s office news release.
