Spokane Arena to host District 8 basketball tournaments
The District 8 4A/3A boys and girls basketball tournaments will be held at the Spokane Arena on Feb. 15-16, announced by the Greater Spokane League Twitter account on Sunday.
Herb Rotchford, the GSL/WIAA District 8 Director, said the agreement with the Arena was for the 2017-18 and 2018-19 seasons.
According to the brackets posted at GreaterSpokaneLeague.org, the 4A district championship and third-place games for boys and girls will be played at the Arena on Feb. 16, with play-in, first round, elimination bracket and semifinals all played at the higher seeds’ home gyms.
District 8 qualifies three teams to the 4A regional playoffs, held Feb. 23-24.
The District 8 4A tournaments will feature the top five 4A teams from the GSL and all five Mid-Columbia Conference 4A teams in a traditional double-elimination tournament.
The fourth- and fifth-place teams from the respective conferences will battle in play-in games on Feb. 6. The winners will be seeded in the first round on Feb. 7 against the first-place teams from the opposite conference, while the GSL second seed will play MCC No. 3, and MCC No. 2 will face the GSL third seed.
The 4A district semifinals and first elimination games are Feb. 10. Two more elimination games are Feb. 13.
The District 8 3A tournament will feature all four GSL 3A teams and all three MCC 3A teams. District 8 qualifies two teams to the 3A regionals, held Feb. 23-24.
The fourth-place GSL team will face the third-place MCC team in a play-in on Feb. 5, with the winner moving on against the GSL No. 2. First-round games are Feb. 6, semifinals are Feb. 9 and elimination games are Feb. 13.
The 3A district championship and elimination bracket finals will be played at the Arena on Feb. 15 and the second-place game on Feb. 16. The rest of the tournament will be played at home gyms.
