Man dies, woman rescued after vehicle crashes in Hayden Lake

A man was killed and a woman was rescued after their vehicle ran into Hayden Lake early Saturday morning.

Around 2:30 a.m., Kootenai County emergency personnel responded to a report of a vehicle in the water at the Honeysuckle boat launch.

When first responders arrived, 25-year-old Andrea Berkey was holding onto a dock, but 34-year-old Chris Lancaster was still under water, according to the Kootenai County Sheriff’s Office.

Berkey was pulled from the frigid waters, but it took a dive team to find Lancaster who was pronounced dead at Kootenai Health.

Both occupants were in the vehicle while it was sinking, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

“This vehicle is sinking, we have (the reporting party) on landline, she is in the vehicle at this time,” a police dispatch scanner can be heard to say.

According to the police scanner, the car was about 15 feet under water.

The Sheriff’s Office did not identify the driver because the incident is still under investigation.
