Area roundup: Eastern Washington women move into tie for first place in Big Sky Conference

Delaney Hodgins finished with game highs of 17 points, 12 rebounds and six blocked shots Saturday to carry the Eastern Washington Eagles (10-9, 5-2 Big Sky) to a 58-41 win over the visiting Southern Utah Thunderbirds in Cheney.

Violet Kapri Morrow added 16 points for the Eagles, who won their fourth consecutive game to move into a four-way tie for first place with Northern Colorado, Weber State and Montana.

Hodgins scored in double figures for the 15th consecutive game and picked up her career with in blocks. Morrow has scored in double figures for five consecutive games.

Hodgins has 1,811 career points and needs 55 to break the school record set by her sister, Hayley.

The Eagles jumped ahead 9-1 and built their lead to 19-3 with a 10-0 outburst. Eastern led 35-17 at halftime.

An 8-0 third-quarter run built the Eagles’ lead to 20 points.

The Eagles outrebounded Southern Utah 44-30. EWU shot 44 percent from the field and held the Thunderbirds to 14-for-56 shooting (25 percent).

“Defense is always a point of emphasis for us,” EWU coach Wendy Schuller said. “We take a lot of pride in guarding whoever it is that we need to guard, and being able to adjust to different styles.”

Natalie Sanchez led the Thunderbirds (3-15, 2-5) with 12 points.

Idaho 83, Northern Arizona 68: Mikayla Ferenz scored 33 points and Taylor Pierce added 21 to guide the Vandals (8-10, 4-3 Big Sky) past the visiting Lumberjacks (4-14, 1-6) in Moscow.

Ferenz and Pierce combined to finish 13 of 25 on 3-pointers as the Vandals went 15 for 35. Geraldine McCorkell added 13 points and a game-high 10 rebounds for Idaho.

Ferenz moved up two spots on Idaho’s all-time career scoring list and has 1,385 points.

Idaho jumped ahead 10-0. The Lumberjacks cut Idaho’s lead to 36-35 with 3:07 left in the second quarter, but Pierce capped a 12-0 Vandals run with three consecutive 3-pointers.

Olivia Lucero led NAU with 15 points, eight rebounds and six assists.

Whitworth 78, Linfield 63: Camy Aguinaldo led four players in double figures with 20 points and the Pirates (7-10, 2-6 Northwest Conference) snapped a seven-game losing streak by defeating the Wildcats (7-10, 3-5) in McMinnville, Oregon.

Grace Douglas added 15 points for Whitworth. She and Lexi Tinney hit three 3-pointers apiece as the Pirates finished 12 of 28. Linfield shot 1 for 12 from long range.

The Pirates’ Madison Moffat scored 13 points, finishing 8 of 10 from the line, and added a game-high 15 rebounds.

Whitworth jumped ahead 11-4 with three 3-pointers and trailed only at 2-0.

Kory Oleson led Linfield with 15 points.

North Idaho 75, CC Spokane 62: Whitney Meier scored a game-high 19 points and Cierra Dvorak added 18 as the host Cardinals (11-7, 2-4 Northwest Athletic Conference) built a 25-point lead and cruised past the Sasquatch (10-7, 1-5).

NIC led 59-34 in the third quarter before the Sasquatch made the score respectable with a 21-2 run.

Dvorak added seven of the Cardinals’ 26 steals as NIC outscored CCS 28-15 on points off turnovers.

NIC’s Sydney Hovde added 12 rebounds and 12 points, shooting 10-for-10 from the line.

Shania Graham led CCS with 17 points, hitting 4 of 6 on 3-pointers while the rest of the team finished 3 of 18.

Jessica Olson added 13 points and seven rebounds for the Sasquatch, and Shaye Swannack had 10 assists.

Men’s basketball

North Idaho 85, CC Spokane 83: RayQuan Evans finished 9 for 9 from the line and scored a game-high 26 points as the host Cardinals (14-5, 4-2 NWAC) held off the Sasquatch (14-5, 4-2) to create a four-way tie for second place in the East Region.

Jalen Burkett added 17 points, and Seth Christiaens had 16 points and 13 rebounds for the Cardinals, who outrebounded CCS 41-30.

NIC shot 23 for 27 from the line while the Sasquatch were 16 for 19.

Dedrick Pakootas led six Sasquatch in double figures with 20 points. He shot 5 for 7 on 3-pointers to lead the team’s 11-for-26 night. NIC was 2 for 9 from long range.

Wrestling

Clackamas 34, North Idaho 14: Jerry Mealey (141 pounds) and Dillon Ulrey (165) registered pins while leading the Cougars past the Cardinals in Oregon City, Oregon.

Clackamas finished with four major decisions. NIC’s Levi Perry pinned Nick Maximov at 184.
