The National Lentil Festival’s Legendary Lentil Cook-off received more than 100 recipes from 24 states and four countries.
Only five contestants will compete Aug. 18 in Pullman for the grand prize.
Judges narrowed down the pool by ranking creativity and uniqueness, anticipated flavor, ease of preparation and availability of ingredients. The top five finalists are:
Elizabeth Koseyan of North Hills, California, for a Mediterranean Lentil and Eggplant Crostini with Garlic Yogurt Drizzle
Hidemi Walsh of Greenfield, Indiana, for a Caramel Lentil Cheesecake with Cookies and Cream Trifle
Jodi Taffel of Altadena, California, for Baked Lentil Empanadas
Margee Berry of White Salmon, Washington, for Seattle-style Salmon Bowls
Ronna Farley of Rockville, Maryland, for Cinnamon Lentil Mini Pies
They’ll travel to Pullman for the National Lentil Festival to prepare their recipes for a panel of judges. The Legendary Lentil Cook-off is at 3 p.m. Aug. 18 on the Cooking Demo Stage at the National Lentil Festival.
The first 100 festival attendees can take part in a public tasting to determine the 2018 “People’s Choice” award. The cook-off is sponsored by the USA Dry Pea and Lentil Council.
All recipe entries will be published in a cookbook, available for purchase at the festival, held in Pullman since 1989. This year’s event is Aug. 17 and 18.
