Inslee’s smelter contradiction

Gov. Inslee’s Newport Silicon Smelter project of “state-wide significance” will emit tons of greenhouse gases and other toxins. Doesn’t this contradict Washington’s carbon policy?

The HiTest (now PacWest) 105-megawatt smelter will use coal, wood chips and quartz to produce silicon metal. Annual estimated smelter emissions include: 320 tons of greenhouse gases, 760 tons of sulfur dioxide, 700 tons of nitrogen oxides, 601 tons of carbon monoxide, 111 tons of particulate matter, and other toxins. These emissions don’t include the transport of coal from Kentucky or Colombia SA. The carbon footprint will be tremendous.

The PacWest website states: “Production process does not require or produce any heavy metals or hazardous chemicals as by-products – All materials required during production process and consumed leave the plant as a saleable product.” But no mention of toxic emissions (byproducts) — isn’t this misrepresentation? Gov. Inslee’s endorsement is on the PacWest website.

Misinformation, secrecy and impropriety of land sales and project funds handling are being challenged by citizen groups (including Responsible Growth*NEW), and the Kalispel Tribe. Smelter emissions will cause health problems and acid rain. Our health, welfare and environment (including our endangered Selkirk caribou) are in peril. Will this exploitative, polluting, undemocratic project be Gov. Inslee’s legacy?
