Doyles reopens for 2018 season

Doyles Ice Cream Parlor is reopening Tuesday for the 2018 summer season.

The seasonal ice cream shop has been a cornerstone of the West Central neighborhood since 1939.

It usually shuts down from October to May.

Jerry Gill bought the iconic corner shop in 1991 and began making ice cream with the vintage equipment. This year, though, he announced his retirement on the shop’s Facebook page in February, noting he was “passing the baton” to family members. They’re planning to reopen the shop for the summer at noon Tuesday.

Gill said the shop was closed for four years before he bought it. And he closed it for a couple of years, too, to care for his ailing mother. He reopened it in 2010.

The shop is decorated with vintage signs and toys and usually carries 14 flavors.

Look for vanilla, chocolate, strawberry, razzle dazzle, blue bubble gum, chocolate chip mint, butter brickle, maple nut, chocolate thunder, fresh banana and watermelon to start this season. Black licorice should be available on Wednesday.

Hours will be noon to 9 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday and noon to 10 p.m. Friday, Saturday and Sunday. The shop will be closed Mondays.

Doyles is at 2229 W. Boone Ave.
