Area roundup: Gonzaga baseball can’t hold late lead against Seattle University

From staff reports

Lucas Denney’s two-out, two-run double to left field capped a three-run seventh inning Wednesday, allowing Seattle University to rally for a 6-4 nonconference baseball win over Gonzaga at Bannerwood Park in Bellevue.

The Redhawks (11-7) trailed 4-2 and had two outs and nobody aboard in the seventh when their comeback began. Jake Cosgrove tripled to left-center and Sean Sutton was hit by a pitch by Trent Schulte.

Taylor Davis (1-2) relieved Schulte and allowed Dalton Hurd’s RBI single to left to cut GU’s lead to 4-3. Denney followed with his winning hit.

Seattle added a run in the eighth on Jacob Prater’s two-out RBI single to center.

The Bulldogs (9-7) struck with one out in the first on Branson Trube’s third homer of the season.

After Seattle tied the game in the bottom of the first, GU’s Nick Nyquist led off the second with a single. He scored from third base when the Zags’ Jace Vandebrake was caught in a rundown on a pickoff play at first.

GU extended its lead to 3-1 on Vandebrake’s sacrifice fly to center in the third. Nyquist doubled to lead off the sixth and scored on Daniel Fredrickson’s sacrifice fly.

Zags starter Keaton Knueppel allowed no hits but two earned runs in three innings, walking three and striking out three.

Long Beach State 5, Washington State 1: Adam Seminaris (1-2) pitched seven sharp innings to lead the 49ers (6-11) past the Cougars (4-9) in nonconference play at Blair Field in Long Beach, California.

Seminaris allowed three hits and one earned run, striking out seven and walking none. The Cougars’ lone run against him came in the seventh, when Justin Harrer beat out an infield single and scored on James Rudkin’s two-out single to left.

WSU starter A.J. Block (0-1) struggled, allowing four hits and three earned runs in two innings. Leonard Jones reached Block for a two-run single to cap a three-run first.
