Woman hit by SUV while crossing street in Spokane Valley

A 71-year-old woman was hospitalized Wednesday morning after she was struck by an SUV while crossing a street in Spokane Valley.

Mary L. Applonie was crossing North Pines Road at East Valleyway Avenue when a northbound Jeep Cherokee hit her shortly before 10 a.m., according to the Washington State Patrol. The driver was identified as Stanley L. Wright, 81, of Fairfield.

Applonie was taken by ambulance to Providence Sacred Heart Medical Center. Trooper Jeff Sevigney said her injuries were not life-threatening, and a hospital spokeswoman said Applonie was in satisfactory condition on Thursday.

The cause of the collision remains under investigation.

“There’s nothing criminal here,” Sevigney said. “At most, someone would get a ticket for something like this.”
