State fines insurance provider Coordinated Care for ongoing network inadequacies

OLYMPIA –The state Office of the Insurance Commissioner has fined a St. Louis-based company $100,000 for failing to follow the compliance plan it agreed to in December to provide an adequate medical-provider network.

The OIC ordered Coordinated Care Corp. on Dec. 12 to stop selling individual health plans in the state because of provider network inadequacies and other ongoing issues. The company admitted to not having enough anesthesiologists in Spokane, King, Snohomish and Pierce counties. According to the company’s own data, the OIC said, its provider network was seriously deficient in other categories of providers, including immunology, dermatology and rheumatology.

Coordinated Care was fined $1.5 million with $1 million suspended, pending no further violations over the next two years. Under the compliance plan, the order to halt sales was lifted by the OIC. However, the OIC said Coordinated Care has not met all milestones it agreed in order to resolve ongoing issues.

The state office said it will continue to work with Coordinated Care to resolve the issues but may impose some or all of the remaining fine if the company continues to violate the compliance plan.
